Cockroach Bomb

A store-bought cockroach bomb certainly looks like it should work. Putting down that newspaper in the middle of the floor, activating the bomb, running out and closing the door and then waiting.  It all feels very professional.  The problem is that while bombs might look the part, but they just don’t deliver when it comes to getting rid of cockroaches.

That’s because cockroach bombs (also knows as bug bombs or foggers) work by spraying insecticide into the air in a confined space. The insecticide droplets stay suspended in the air for a short time then the droplets fall to the floor and land on whatever surfaces are around, like tables, lamps, couches etc.

And because cockroaches are nocturnal, unless you are setting off the bombs of in the middle of the night, the cockroaches are mostly likely safely hidden away in their nests when you let the bombs off.

And very, very little of the insecticide penetrates the cracks where cockroaches nest, in wall crevices and floor cracks

So unless a cockroach is unlucky enough to be out and about when you let the bomb off, you are unlikely to kill very many. Sure, you will end up with a few dead ones on the floor, but the impact on the nest will be minimal.

Hazards of a cockroach bomb

The other problem with these bombs is that they are highly toxic so you will have to clean every surface in the room afterwards, as they will be covered in poison.

Cockroach bombs are also a potential fire hazard.  The aerosol is highly flammable. So every potential ignition source has to be switched off, including the electricity at the mains – which means your fridge and freezer will be off for a considerable period of time,  as well as gas fuelled pilot lights (including your stove and hot water system).

In short, cockroach bombs are a lot of effort and risk for very little result.

That’s why if you have a serious infestation, the only way to truly get rid of them is to call in the professionals who will use a mix of different techniques to ensure the nest is hit quickly and effectively.
