Cockroach Infestation

If you live in Sydney, chances are you are very familiar with cockroaches. In fact, almost every Sydney suburb is prone to cockroach infestation. They like our weather and our houses!

German cockroaches are the most prevalent in Sydney (and responsible for most Sydney cockroach infestations), but there are plenty of other varieties too, and all Sydney cockroaches like warm, moist indoor places to live, where they can feed on human and pet foods, decaying and fermenting matter, and a whole lot of other substances too.

As long as they have food, water and shelter, an infestation can very quickly occur. That’s because cockroaches breed very, very quickly.  For example, a female German cockroach only lives about 20 weeks but during that time she can produce seven egg capsules, each holding up to 48 eggs.  This means that one female can be the matriarch of up to 35,000 cockroaches.

Cockroaches not only look disgusting, they actually are disgusting. As well as being undesirable pests, an infestation is also a threat to your health.  While you’re fast asleep in your bed, cockroaches are up and about, crawling over your floors, the benches where you prepare your food and even your fruit bowls, contaminating them all with cockroach droppings.  Cockroaches can transfer the microorganisms that spread diseases, including salmonella (which cause very, very nasty food poisoning) as well as staphylococcus and streptococcus.

What is so bad about a cockroach infestation?

However one of the most revolting and dangerous things about these pests (and there are a few!) is that they periodically shed their external skeleton. And then you breathe it in, along with bits of cockroach droppings. Not only is this a pretty disgusting thing to think about, their droppings also have very real impact on your health because they can trigger asthma. That’s because the bits of skin and droppings act as antigens (foreign protein) which when inhaled, cause allergic and asthmatic reactions.

This is why a cockroach infestation has to be treated as quickly as possible.

Because cockroaches are nocturnal you may not see them, even if you have an infestation. But there are telltale signs to look for- such as droppings (cockroach droppings look like coffees grounds or black pepper,  and sometimes can even be even cylindrical in shape).  Also, because they shed their outside skeleton you may even notice these around the house, usually in fairly hidden locations such as behind furniture or under couches.  Some cockroach species also emit a really unpleasant smell that you may notice in the event of a severe infestation.

There’s myth that states the only thing to survive a nuclear war would be the cockroach. This is may or may not be true, what is a cockroach fact is that they are incredibly resilient when it comes to methods to kill them. Which is why most of the store bought cockroach traps and cockroach bombs either don’t work, or only work for a limited time.

The only way to ensure a cockroach infestation is eradicated quickly and efficiently, or better still, avoided, is to call in the experts, M&M Termite & Pest Control, as soon as possible.
