German Cockroach Pest Control
While there are more than 3,500 species of cockroach around the world, the most common varieties in Australia are the American, Oriental, & German Cockroaches. In fact, many of the calls we receive are for German Cockroach pest control.
American cockroaches are big and black. Oriental cockroaches are medium with a dark brown to black colour. And the dreaded German cockroaches are smaller and brown, with two black stripes on the back just behind the head on the adult cockroaches.
While there are lots of good things that have come out of Germany, the German cockroach isn’t one of them! And unfortunately it’s the most common cockroach found in Sydney homes.
Otherwise known as Blatella germanica, the German cockroaches range in size from about 1.1cm to 1.6 cm long. They do not like the light and spend most of their time hiding. And because they are much smaller than other cockroaches, they are able to hide in tiny places, which is why the German cockroach has been so successful at living with us. And so hard to get rid of!
The only time the German cockroach ventures out of their little hiding spots is to eat or mate, and they usually do those things under the cover of darkness when you are fast asleep. They do not like to venture far from their hiding spots so their hiding places are usually within 3 meters of their food source. German cockroaches like to live together and often large numbers of them can be found under ovens, fridges and dishwashers, as well as in tiny spaces in the wall or cabinets. These dirty pests leave droppings in these areas that actually mark the spot as a “fecal focal point” so other cockroaches know where to gather. Gross, right?
One of the reasons German Cockroaches are so prevalent in Sydney is because they reproduce much faster then other cockroach varieties. Females produce relatively large numbers (30 to 48) of eggs per each of their seven capsules. And while most other varieties drop their egg capsules days before the eggs hatch (which means the chances of them not surviving until they hatch is fairly high), the female protects the eggs by going into hiding herself and holding the egg capsule on the end of her abdomen until the eggs are about 24 hours from hatching. By having more eggs and by protecting those eggs, the German cockroach population is able to increase rapidly, reaching infestations proportion very quickly. In fact, even though a female only lives for about 20 weeks, she can end up as the matriarch of up to 35,000 cockroaches.
There’s a myth that states the only thing to survive a nuclear war would be the cockroach. This is may or may not be true, but what is a fact is that they are incredibly resilient when it comes to methods to kill them. Which is why most of the store bought cockroach traps and cockroach bombs either don’t work, or only work for a limited time. They are simply not powerful enough to deal with such a fast breeding pest such as the German Cockroach, nor can they get into the tiny crevices that the German Cockroach hides in.
